ANDRÉE BROWN [1977, Jewelry + Metalsmithing]
Based in New York, NY
Andree Brown’s current project Leaves of Durham, she tells the story through abstract sculpture of the forest, trees, leaves, and the native soil that birthed shapes, sizes, and textures of the natural environment. She have been focusing on various indigenous leaves, making wax maquettes on site, and then building larger sculptures.. The green wax she uses for the outer core is versatile, melting at a high temperature, then cooling to the strength of soap stone. The sculpture is finished by filing sanding the surface. Some are cast in bronze, and porcelain, while others remain in wax.
