Be the person on the street that gets asked, What’s T1D? Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that is on-set at any age. It is not caused by what you eat, or how much sugar you intake. Your immune system attacks your pancreas, the organ that produces insulin. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that allows your body to use sugar from carbohydrates in the food that you eat for energy or to store glucose for future use. Those of us with T1D have to act as our own pancreas and inject insulin to our body based on the foods we eat, stress we have or exercise we do. We also base it on our blood sugar at the time.
