BAUBOU
EUN YOUNG CHOI [2005, Jewelry + Metalsmithing]
Based in New York, NY
Eun Young was born in Korea and studied fashion. After working as a fashion designer in Seoul, she came to the US to study Jewelry and Metalsmithing at RISD. She founded whimsical jewelry brand, Baubou after working in prominent jewelry companies in New York with an urge of spreading a message that jewelry should carry character and message, not as a quick turnover fashion item.
Eunyoung’s design, which favors playful curves, free forms than straight and rigid lines, takes inspiration from art and design world happening in New York and her stories about her past and present life experience. But it always carries humor and surprises with unexpected details. For example, in her recent collections, Delightful lines, she puts piglets with their coiled up tails as ear wires. She combines traditional jewelry making techniques that she learned from RISD like wax carving, bending wires by hand, which used in Wink collection for eyelash with a new technique from her professional experience like 3d print. Each style is created in her own studio by herself with the help from local jewelers and business in the heart of New York.
