Carolynn Baker’s work is grounded in the concepts and imagery found in charts and maps. These documents are, in essence, a universal language, conveying a depth and variety of information. Maps are intrinsically powerful objects, often straddling the line between information and misinformation. Humans place a great amount of trust in these communications: assuming that mapmakers are representing truth. Her work asks viewers to question the motivation of the mapmaker and the map.

Layers of high gloss finish on every piece create the appearance of a dynamic veneer. The high sheen of the surfaces naturally invites viewers to touch the work, drawing attention to how strongly our interactions are determined by what we are interacting with. She invites viewers to touch her work, reinforcing the dissonance between artwork and maps and artists and mapmaker.
