ALEXANDRA KARAMALLIS [2010, Textiles]
Based in Brooklyn, NY
As a textile designer and artist, Karamallis has always had creative inclinations towards a variety of mediums. Her unique technical knowledge of textiles, her love for art and creating works on paper, her interest in the curation and design of spaces, and her draw towards fashion have often felt like conflicting creative forces pulling her in different directions. However, through the exploration of her varying interests she has come to realize that they are all connected to her desire to create something – whether it be a space, a piece of art, a garment, or something else that allows women to feel at ease and at expressive of oneself. DAĒZA is a knitwear brand through which Karamallis explores her fascination with the concept of the paradise garden – a form of garden that was conceived of in Ancient Iran as a space for protected relaxation, with the aim of creating paradise on earth. This concept touches on an experience that has been withheld from women throughout history. Through knitwear she creates garments that create a balance and tension between structure and softness, that are at once protective and relaxed, that make a woman feel beautiful and comfortable.
