DIDI SUYDAM CONTEMPORARY
DIDI SUYDAM [1985, Jewelry + Metalsmithing]
Based in Jamestown, RI
Didi has exhibited and sold her work in galleries and shops nationally and internationally since graduating from RISD in 1985. She has received several awards including the De Beers Diamond Design Award, a fellowship in Craft from The National Endowment for the Arts and fellowships in both Craft and Design by the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. She has been published in books and magazines on American jewelers , metalsmithing, and design. She has also been featured in numerous fashion magazines.
Didi believes that wearing jewelry is a personal and intimate expression of who we are, and what we identify with. She feels her pieces become expressions of “inner power” for the wearer. Looking back to ancient culture and architecture, her work is both sculptural and fluid. She looks for the essence of form: the spirit, the balance, and the elemental. As well, Didi feels it is important for the piece to respond to the landscape of the body.
