Khatt Books was founded in 2010 by RISD graduate Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFarès, who acts as design director and chief editor. Huda is responsible for the design of the books and has written several of the published titles. Khatt Books is a specialized publishing house, focuses on topics such as typography, graphic design, illustration, other applied and visual arts from or about the Middle East. We publish works that instigate change and further development of Arab visual culture. We publish research-based monograms and creative publications by young authors with remarkable voices. We aim to build an archive of the design history and contemporary visual culture of the region. We believe that languages and cultures should coexist, and therefore we make bi-lingual publications (mainly Arabic – English).
