Katherine Kean makes paintings to help people fall in love with Nature’s phenomena. In the landscape a person can feel their place in an immense force, within the patterns of energy that create and sustain us. In contrast, our ever increasing urbanization is isolating us in industrial deserts, adrift from the vital force of wildness. Landscape has its own language. There is code in the swirl of the wind, the curl of a wave, or the trajectory of light. Working from direct observation, memory, and imagination; rethinking and redoing outdoor studies again and again, working through an idea from sheet to sheet, and then on linen canvas, Kean allows insight, together with surprise, to appear. Katherine Kean’s aim and wish for her paintings is to remind and re-inspire the viewer to seek out and engage Nature, to be re-enchanted with the utter mystery, wonder, and spirit of the wild.
