Nine Stories Furniture Co designs and builds one-of-a-kind and limited edition works of furniture and design objects. In their studio practice, emphasis is placed on the development of systems for recycling unusual materials, such as auto-body panels, the internal workings of pianos, and braided fire hose to name just a few.The studio and workshop is located in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a hub of artisan-run small businesses, and has been since 2007. All of the work created by Nine Stories is made by hand in this location.
In 2008 I.D. Magazine featured the “Elsie tables” in their “New & Notable” issue in the category of “green” design. In 2010 the New York Times featured “Tatums Lounge” in an article about locally made design objects titled “Looking for the ‘Made in N.Y.’ Label”. Since the mid 2000’s the studio has exhibited at many of the design fairs including “Sight Unseen”, “ICFF”, and “Wanted Design”.
Andrew Jay Rumpler, the studio founder has been also be responsible for several curatorial presentations which aim to bring contemporary designers to the public by featuring not only finished works, but artifacts of a working process. Most recently he curated “Ideally, Yes” a group show of design at NARS Foundation project space in Brooklyn. Andrew also is an adjunct professor at Parsons / The New School in the Interior Design MFA program.
