Vanessa Yanow uses her studio as both a laboratory for research through experimentation, and as a playground for creation. She pushes the boundaries of traditional techniques and reclaims the importance of playfulness as an inherent part of her processes. Vanessa’s primary techniques are flame working with glass, and transforming textiles by cutting, sewing, digitally embroidering, and sometimes even burning! Because her jewelry pieces are made with non-traditional materials, each design requires her to invent new processes for that particular design. She is committed to the collaborative experience with materials, and incorporates everyday objects into her creations to challenge herself and to infuse a sense of humour or irony into the final design. They are not just pieces of costume jewelry – they are conceptual, affordable and wearable artworks. Vanessa’s work always seems to perk the public’s curiosity and more often than not puts a smile on their face.
